I used to play a mud but it went down a few weeks ago from a lack of a strong player base, we ave like 5 constant players and nobody else stayed for more then a month.

I play Muds, mostly because they don't need download or installation, and because we can play it from everywhere, even from job. Ask your question is like to ask the question "Why peoples still play society games when they have video games ?".

Well there could be a numerous number if different reasons for that. I would probably say it's because alot of people would rather be more social and chat to others and have fun rather then play RPG's or video games that aren't as social or friendly.

MUDs are usually hilarious, and often possess original concepts. why not I say. Its like reading abook, you just have to pay attention and use some imagination.

Graphics don't make the game. Playability and substance do

The only important thing to me in a game is that it is fun. And If a game has 3D graphics, with massive explosions, giant fireball spells, extremely large swords, then it is more fun to me, since my imagination cannot draw out these kinds of things in my mind as good as a professional 3D graphics designer can.

there are plenty of MuD's that are largely unique. and some people prefer a small player base where everyone knows each other, over 100's of thousands of people causing a head-ach :p

It has its self soul, like the Commodore64 has or old UNIX machines in schools. MuDs and the legacy textbased adventures like Guild Of Thieves provided the Imagination and inspiration, needed to build the new generation games that we play today.
Black Screen and a blinking caret but the world in our heads. I dont play MuDs now, but i always remember and respect its existence.

The best MUD I've ever played, is one named Dragonrealms. To date, it is the most expensive game I've ever played, including graphic games. A regular account is $15.99, Premium is around $40, and Platinum I think is like $60 or $80 per month.

I say it's the best, but a more accurate statement would be it's the best AND worst I've ever played.
