After this has been proposed many times we finally decided to actually do it, GameOgre will be making a frequent newsletter about all that's happening in the world of MMORPGs and GameOgre itself!

But this thread is not only to inform you of this joyful fact, because this is a letter written for all of you, we want to give you all the chance to propose ideas of what should be in it!
Also, this letter cannot be made by one single person, that would be way too much work! And we all know how busy Ogreman is, therefore we are looking for active members who are willing to work on this letter (let's start with a monthly one) in a group of about 3-6 people.

If you have any brilliant ideas or are willing to join the Writing group post here :) (please note that joining the group requires you to be active and online regularly to keep group communications smoothly, so do NOT apply if you can't spare the time necessary) (also note that joining the group does not necessarily mean you have to write articles or similar things if you don't like that kind of thing, people who search for news and collect it are important too)

Here's a list of ideas we came up with uptill now:
    - Of course a section for news about the MMORPG Scene, big game releases, important patches/updates to the big MMOs, game closures, large scandals. Basically anything important and interesting enough to mention.
    - A section for news about GameOgre itself, new giveaways, new events, the showdown, any important changes etc
    - An active member spotlight, every episode of the newsletter a different active member will be put in the spotlight with basic information about, what they do, what they are known for and maybe some funny quotes
    - The reviews of the week can be published in the newspaper
    -

Kit will be approached for his great writing skills and I will help out myself if needed, but I want to keep Ogreman out of the writing process as he is busy enough already
So we will need some more people to help out! Applications:
    -

Great post, King:). I think a Newsletter will be quite fun if enough people are willing to contribute.

Everybody can help in there own way:). It won't be a job as much as just helping the community. For example, you can add a tidbit to each newsletter about your favorite game etc.

Another possible idea: A 'guestwriter', a diffent member everytime who gets his own little place to write whatever he or she wants (something about GameOgre, something about a game, whatever you want :))

    Still no volunteers?? =oo

Yes, we can do something like that, King:).

Probably going to have set this in motion before we get more offers to help:). A newsletter has been brought up a few times in the past over the years.

Ok, the plug-in has been bought at ProVb and installed:). Now we just need to start with the content.

Release time frame, I think we should shoot for the first week of May.

Member of the Month, I think we should use the Winner of the voting that's going on right now... this would require release be after May 1st. If you use the current winner right now then when it releases (at the end or start of a month) there'd be a new member of month or vary close to one.

Member spotlight, I'm thinking the member of the month winner of the previous month should get first dibs at the spotlight. Said member can choose to deffer, en fact anyone should be able to choose not to be in the spotlight and at least for now can only be in the spotlight once. The winner will automatically deffer if he/she's been in the spotlight already and a different member will be picked.

What about a monthly content thread? That would leave this thread open and uncluttered for ideas. Links to big and interesting news, game releases, patches etc could be posted so they don't get lost. Could also be used to track things like new giveaways, game of the week's, showdown updates etc for the month... some of this is already tracked but having it all in one place for easy reference would be nice. It'd also be an easy way for people that don't write to contribute.

That' how I imagined the spotlight and MotM Aaddron :) I fully agree with that ^

The monthly content thread is actually a real good idea to track it! I suppose you are thinking about something like the infoboard?

Yes except with a little more structure and organization, I'm thinking it works like the infoboard but the first post or two contains something like:

    Reviews of the Week:
    Games of the Week:
    Patch news:
    Game Releases:
    Game Closures:

    etc.

Then as the stuff is posted a few people can update the categories, at the end of the month we'll have a complete and easy reference list... at least in theory. It'd be extra work but at the end of the month it'd be better than having to go back over the whole thread or without the thread, the whole site.

Okay great, we'll have to make that thread soon then :)

But what about the lay-out, anyone here who's good at making a clear design which can be re-used every month (main area for important game news, smaller boxes for the spotlight and short news about the Forums)

Some things to keep in mind.

    1. The newsletter needs to appeal to the masses. We want to bring people to the gameogre site and forums. Most of the regulars already know whats going on with the site and come here often, so you want to pick out the most important and engaging material that will interest a wide audience.

    2. Use the KISS(keep it simple stupid) method. Remember our target audience are gamers and "most" gamers are huge fans of TLDR. Once you start making it too complicated, too long, too big etc., most people are going to check out before they even check in and just delete the email. In addition too much formatting and lots of links can cause a lot of email providers to check it as spam and send it to the spam folders. Ok so been playing around with a demo of the Newsletter plugin, looks like the main content part of it will have to be done as a Forum Post... it'll then take the post and put it into one of the three templates. It actually works better than it sounds and I think this will work to our benefit as it's gonna force simplicity.

Still needs some more testing but we should start planing how the post should be formatted. Feel free to post any layouts here.

    Needs:

    Newsletter Name:

Intro has it's own box so that wont be included in the post, gonna need one though.

As for the post layout itself, here's a categories pool... we don't have to use all of them.

Categories Pool (let me know if any are missing)

    Review of the Weeks
    Game of the Weeks
    Gaming OST of the Month
    Game of the Month
    Forum Gamer
    Game Releases
    Game Closures
    Member Spotlight
    Member of the Month
GameOgre news (new giveaways, new events etc)
Possibly 1 or 2 custom articles depending on length

Other news will be handled via it's own integrated news thingy so no need to worry about that.

I'm thinking the content thread idea should be combined with the thread that will be created for each Issue of the Newsletter itself... First post will be the Newsletter, rest will function like described above. This will keep everything in one place and any content that's not added will be right below the Newsletter post itself. Ogreman will have to make this thread. Just need a title, keep in mind the Newsletter will have it's own title, the title of the thread will be the title of the "content section"... it has to have one. I'm thinking Issue # might be the best way to go.
