gamescom Developers Q&A | gamescom | World of Warplanes

The true fan knows that gamescom is not just about snapping a goodie bag, but also about being the first to catch a snippet of the gameâ€™s future. Were you lucky enough to find yourself at our booth when one of our many developer Q&Aâ€™s were happening? This year, we invited Oleg Gotnyan, General Manager of Persha Studio and Miroslav Baranenko, Head of Art, to give an account of the gameâ€™s progress and to answer the questions from the many fans in the audience.
If you didnâ€™t manage to hear their replies on the stream or at gamescom itself, hereâ€™s a practical play-by-play to bring you up to speed!

What will your objectives be after the game is released?

The development of World of Warplanes never stops. We have a road map for things that we want to tackle for a long time, even after release. The first step will obviously be to continue to balance the game so that it stays fun with all the new content which we will have released by then.

How about the long-rumoured bomber escort missions? Any news?
Yes. Last year we announced that we were working on new game modes. This year we can confirm that testing of these new modes has progressed significantly so that weâ€™re much closer to the moment when weâ€™ll be able to reveal concrete information on this. Expect to hear on this soon in one of the coming updates.

Are there any plans to combine the three â€˜World ofâ€¦â€™ games?
The three games each feature a very different play style, so it would be very challenging to combine them in one single mode and have the game still be balanced and fair for everyone. However, what we will do is re-unite all the games under the same roof via extensive use of the Clan Wars mode. Youâ€™ve already seen that we have put a lot of effort into renewing and improving this mode through our latest introduction of Campaigns, Missions and so forth in World of Tanks. We will build upon that and go even further to create a mode which will combine all of our games in Clan Wars to make it become something truly unique.

Will there be a Company Mode in World of Warplanes just as in World of Tanks?
No, not really! Weâ€™ve experimented with this option for World of Warplanes, but decided against it in the end. The nature of the game just doesnâ€™t lend itself too well to this kind of playstyle. Besides, we already have flights in the game to connect players. Thatâ€™s what we want to build upon for now.

How many nations are planned for the game in total? Will there be more after the Brits?
As you pointed out, weâ€™re preparing for the release of the British aircraft at the moment. Their arrival is not too far away and will keep players busy for a while. After that, we will concentrate on first filling out the various branches. In time, more nations will become possible. Weâ€™ll tell you more about that when the time has come.

Can we expect to see World of Warplanes on consoles as well?
First we have to release the game for PC. Then World of Tanks needs to come out for XBOX 360. Then we can concentrate on thinking about releasing World of Warplanes for consoles as well. Right now itâ€™s still too early to tell.

Will we see more World of Tanks-inspired maps in World of Warplanes?
Stand-alone maps for World of Warplanes that are at their core inspired by maps which we already have in World of Tanks are possible and could be introduced in the future. Right now, we are focusing on creating original and new material to excite the players. A true combination, where exactly the same map as in World of Tanks would also appear for the planes is not possible for balancing reasons. Maps in World of Tanks are specifically built with tank-appropriate conditions in mind that are difficult to transfer to the World of Warplanes. However, we will continue to unify and solidify the Wargaming universe by expanding on the idea of Clan Wars and a unified Premium Account, which will give benefits to players across all three future Wargaming titles.

How many programming hours in total did your team put into developing World of Warplanes so far?
(This question causes both developers to laugh.) Well, itâ€™s got to be some crazy amount of hours by now. You could actually calculate a rough estimate! We have around 30 programmers whoâ€™ve been working on the game for 3 years now, all hours of the day. So overall we must be getting close to a million working hours for our programmers alone.
Our team is still growing by the way! So if youâ€™re a gifted programmer who wants to work in the video games industry, you should check our vacancies and maybe apply!

Will we see bigger maps that will allow for an increase in players to have 30 vs. 30 players matches?
Right now we want to keep things at 15 vs. 15 battles. This is what we find to be the number of players that ensures the most balanced and productive gameplay for all our testers. However, we will continue to monitor the situation and it may become a possibility for the future, if the fans still demand it by then.

How about more city maps for World of Warplanes?

We already have one major city map in the game with â€œBayâ€, which resembles San Francisco or rather a generic city in the Bay area in the US. We know that players like it a lot and will continue to create new maps that will have the players discover new locations all around the world. Itâ€™s very likely that another city map will join the roster of already existing maps sometime in the future.

With the arrival of the British, will we see new classes of planes introduced into the game? Or just new planes?
For the moment weâ€™ll stick with our four existing classes and just add new vehicles to fill their branches. In the British tech tree you will find two classes: Fighters for iconic planes such as the Supermarine Spitfire, and Heavy Fighters for heavier bomber aircraft such as the Blenheim.

We will continue to fill up the rosters from one update to the next. You need in keep in mind though that itâ€™s a hefty task to introduce a new plane into the game. A plane takes on average 1-2 months from the first idea to the final balancing before it is ready to be put to use in World of Warplanes. For the British aircraft, the construction process for just one single Spitfire takes about 4 weeks. Planes that have more detail and are bigger in size such as the Heavy Fighters that you will see in the British tree, require even more work because of their complexity.
Over time, there will be a lot more planes in the game. Donâ€™t forget that weâ€™re still in Open Beta and that the game has not even been released yet. Thereâ€™s still so much to come!

Can you share one of the coming planes to come next on your development list?
We can confirm that the German bomber Junkers Ju 87 â€œStukaâ€ is gearing up for an appearance in the game pretty soon! It will be part of a branch extension, which should be a lot of fun for many fans out there. Look out for it in one of the coming updates!

It's aiming to be a simulation with the elements of arcade, or maybe an arcade with the elements of simulation, giving it the best of both worlds, but the thing is, that's not working out. No it wouldn't, battles in real life come in all shapes and sizes. Reducing the map size some with good design to bring people closer has nothing to do with arcade, it appeals to arcade yes as it would be more action but it wouldn't diminish it for everyone else. I'm not talking about putting everyone in a box here. Why not have a couple in the map rotation.

Because the maps are already extremely small as it is now, and they were actually bigger before, one of the patches in closed beta actually reduced all maps size by 25% which was a horrible move.

The game already feels like everyone is boxed in, the number of collisions I see per battle is over 1 per battle which is insane considering how few airplane loses were actually due to air to air collisions. This is precisely why they introduced this idiotic collision avoidance system (which should really be called collision increasing system due to what it really does), cause way too many planes are colliding, and they are colliding cause they tend to be forced to fly very near to each other.
And by being boxed in, I don't mean just horizontal map size, I mean vertical too, literally all the fights take place within 2000 meters off the ground, the highest I've ever been was 3500 meters - there is a sort of flight ceiling in place and it's really way too low. Many air battles were fought on altitudes of 5000+ meters, some even at 10.000, WoWp dummed that down to 2000 tops for fights.

bottom line

Is plainly wrong, if people were even closer together, you'd reach the enemy even quicker than you do already (20-30 seconds from battle start), and it would bring even more planes in a close space, yes that would be a lot of action, but it would be a lot more chaos, with a lot more collisions, and a lot less tactics (which are already so few)

I'm not talking about putting everyone in a box here.

Everyone is in a box already with the current map sizes, you're talking about making the box even smaller. That's simply full-arcade approach, and that's definitely not what I want to see in this game. If I wanted that, I'd play Quake

SU-100Y

This Premium Soviet Tank Destroyer is a very good damage dealer. Armed with a powerful 130mm gun, it can easily destroy many of the same-tier vehicles with just one shot. If undetected, it can be an unpleasant surprise to higher-tier tanks as well. The very massive and identifiable silhouette is sometimes hard to hide and protect, but the feeling of driving such a huge beast is incomparable.

The first thing that you might wonder about this Tier III German vehicle is how a crew of four can squeeze into such a tiny tank! The second thing you might notice is how fast it goes. The engine power and top speed means that this little tank can jet around the lower-tier battlefields, leaving most others behind in the dust. Itâ€™s an ideal stealth scout â€“ small, fast and nimble.

M22 Locust

This American Tier III vehicle has a slightly higher top speed, a more damaging gun and a little more armour than the T-15. However, the engine power is not as high, which means slower acceleration and less mobility. This premium tank is one of the most commonly spotted premium vehicles in game. The Lowe is a German tier VIII heavy tank. It is equipped with a 10.5 cm KwK 46 L/70 gun and is one of the best killing machines on the World of Tanks battlefields. The Lowe is also one of the best credit making tanks in the game and is an essential addition to the garage for every tank collector.

IS-6

The IS-6 is a Soviet tier VIII heavy tank. The armour on the tank is relatively thin but it is very well sloped, giving a good defensive capability. The tank is equipped with the 122 mm D-30 gun. This has a relatively low penetration, so you will need to adjust your tactics and aim for enemy weak spots, but the gun is capable of delivering a lot of damage with a good rate of fire.

FCM 50 t

This vehicle is a Premium Tier VIII French heavy tank. Even though it is classified as heavy, the playstyle of this vehicle is closer to that of a medium tank. Whilst it is lightly armoured, the FCM 50 t is quite fast, very mobile, and armed with the very reliable 90mm DCA-45 gun. If you like to play as support and excel at sneaky flanking and peek-a-boo tactics, the FCM 50t will be your new best friend!
