Optfine, if that doesn't improve your FPS nothing will. :)

Set minecraft (it can appear as java) to highest priority possible in task manager, I got at first around 10-15 fps after this up to 30 (i locked it on 30, maybe it could have gone higher)

Turning down your maximum FPS can actually help you lag less.

I think cant do that but you can change the grapic setting in game menu for a better playing :)

  14. I used to build a habit of pressing a certain combination of keys, I think F3 + A, to reload chunks whenever I felt that the game was lagging a bit, but I'm not sure if that really does anything or if it's just a placebo effect.

But one thing I know for sure is to avoid generating custom terrain, especially the extreme setting. Flat land usually the best terrain when it comes to smooth FPS. And speaking of flat land, don't try to make a terrain that's only made out of sand, because when you update the sand (by placing anything down), the FPS just gets worse; pretty much anything that requires some activation worsens FPS, like blowing up a ton of TNT.

But aside from all of that, it really just comes down to how powerful your computer is. Minecraft generally runs well because the game is mostly cubes, so even the average computer won't have too much trouble with FPS.
