    Civ 4 is pretty fun online but you have to buy it and it's not really an MMO but it has the same feel.

    There's DreamLords which is free. There's also the Age of Empires series and the Empire Earth series but they have to be bought.

    If you want retail RTS, you can't go past Starcraft or Warcraft 3. Age of Empires is also good but very imbalanced and no longer supported.

    As for MMORTS you vould try dreamlords but I didn't find it very interesting. And the constant switching between browser and client drove me crazy.

    You could just get a regular retail RTS, Starcraft is $10 nowadays and it's got 50,000 people.
