Jailbreaking an iTouch means that you adjust the firmware settings so that you can download as many apps as you want for free. Like if you would normally spend $10 on a cool app, you can now download it free. Of course it's illegal, but people download music free all the time and don't seem to care so many jailbreak this and don't care either. There are other disadvantages to jailbreaking it as well, such as it voiding the warranty, it really comes down to how much apps are worth to you, if they mean a lot then jailbreaking is probably the way to go.

There are just many reasons to do it as to not do it. Saying it isn't a good idea is a matter of personal preference.

With all the people that jailbreak it nowadays I highly doubt he would be singled out. The only people that ever get caught with these things are those you pirate large items (like movies, games, large software, anything that takes up lots of GBs looks suspicious). So long as he doesn't go crazy downloading every app that he sees he should be fine. The argument of the other side is just that because there are already so many free apps and most of the paid ones are only a couple bucks, why risk it. It just really depends though how many apps he will be using. If you only plan on having like 20-30 apps, I would just buy them, but if your one of those fanatics that has like dozens and dozens, then jailbreaking will save you a lot of cash.

 

My friends all jailbroke theirs. well most of them. 1 of them is new =p

Usually they leech off the wifi at school so they don't get in any trouble ;p (safer)

Though...I torrent everything so if I had one hell...id jailbreak it. Just like doing that to my PSP (don't remember what this PSP version is called but u get playstation online stuff for free + u can add other types of games like super mario or w/e =p)

We did it to my son's psp as well. You get any psp game they make for free offline with it lol, but yeah only certain psp models can do it.

U shld. If u dont like it you can restore it and it will become un-jailbroken so you have nothing to loose

 

To my understanding, it is legal to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch in the United States.
If jailbreaking it messes it up, you could always throw it in the microwave and say that it overheated ^.^
