Do you play characters of the opposite gender?

Yes, but only if the game is gender locked. If there's a class I wanna try but I can't be a male, I still try it. Otherwise I never play as a female

I tried that in Lineage 2. I was too young at those times. Used to undress a Dark Elf and run through Giran asking for money. Gosh, it looks embarassing now

I rarely play characters of the opposite gender. The only times when I play characters of the opposite gender are when I don't like the male character at all, when I like the female character more, or when I'm creating an alt to replay the game.

 

I don't play with characters of the opposite gender pretty much at all because i am stubborn and i want to use male characters only but if there is no way around it and you actually have to play with female character then i will play with one.
An example that comes to mind is that there is one quest in Runescape where you actually have to change your gender to female in order to defeat an opponent because this opponent is not able to be defeated by a man.

 

I usually choose female characters for ranged classes and male for melee classes, but no rule, just what i find more interesting at the moment.

I have done it before, but usually the characters that are females I've done little progress on. I usually play on a female character to see how the female template looks.
