Has Palworld popularized a new game genre?

Discussion in 'Sandbox Games' started by Snowy, Jan 25, 2024.

  1. In the 1980s, platformer became huge with Super Mario Bros. and action/adventure with The Legend of Zelda and various other games, straying from the arcade games that had dominated the market.

In the 1990s, MUDs were the earliest examples of sandbox. The 1990s also popularized first-person shooter with games like Doom and Quake. And also, the creature-catching genre was popularized with games like Pokemon.

Although 1990s did have MMORPGs, the 2000s was when MMORPGs reigned, notably with World of Warcraft. Social games and mobile games also became prevalent in the late 2000s, and world-generative survival sandbox was popularized by Minecraft

Then in the 2010s, battle royale took the stage.

Now we're in the 2020s and Palworld has become the unprecedented game of 2024. This game is more than just a sandbox, however. It combines elements of various games (Pokemon, ARK, Rust, Minecraft, etc.) to create a unique and cohesive game, a genre that I would consider to be a mashup genre?

What do you think? Will the mashup genre be the next wave to soar throughout the 2020s?
