Well you can use and stone and other materials..... but i prefer wood like you

wood is nice. i would use wood / logs / stone / cobblestone to make a nice house.
if i build a tower, i would use towerwood, i think its the most beautiful material in the game (its from twilight forest mod).
but i've always wanted to build a floating cathedral out of obsidian and nether bricks.

While materials vary from what kind of house you intend to build, I would say the most important materials for building a house are:

- Chiseled Stone, or some kind of other stone for the base of a house, or for the majority of the house.
- Wooden Plank for the exterior of the house, and probably the floor of the house
- Carpet, or alternatively a block of Wool, for an interesting floor design.
- Glass, or glass panes, so you can see the outside.
- Torches, glowstone blocks, or redstone lanterns to add lighting to your home and surroundings.
- Stairs, especially for houses with more than one floor, or for decorative designs like stairs that look like chairs.
- Decorative items and miscellaneous blocks/items (pot of flower, furnace, chests, paintings, etc.)

 

I would advice you to build your house mostly out of materials which don't catch on fire so you don't burn your whole house down by accident or by a sudden flash of lightning.
I would go with stone (any variant), wooden planks to make the floor, torches so it isn't dark in there, carpets and windows will be made with glass blocks or glass panes (pick which one you prefer with a color of your choosing).
