In fact, Victory Day was proclaimed multiple times and at different occasions depending on the various geographical regions where a major conflict subsided. The special starts on Monday, September 2nd at 07:30 CEST (GMT + 2) and runs until Thursday, September 5th at 08:00 CEST.

The Second World War was a global war of all the major powers of the 20th century in what has been so far the biggest military conflict in the history of mankind. While it has a pretty clear beginning, generally held to be that of September 1st 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, there are multiple dates that are believed to mark the end of this giant, world-spanning conflict.
Depending on the region, the end of World War II in Europe can be attributed to May 8th, when Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces, or May 9th, when a similar agreement was signed with Soviet Russia. However, many other conflicts still waged on outside Europe, mainly in Asia where Japan was the ‘Last Man Standing’ and still opposing the Allies and Soviet Russia alike.
The ‘beginning of the end’, which almost instantly led to Japan’s capitulation was the dropping of two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th. Already on the ropes and severely beaten in the South Pacific, this vicious devastation inflicted by the US on Japanese home territory prompted Emperor Hirohito to announce Japan’s plans to surrender almost immediately afterwards on August 10th. August 15th, the day on which his voice was publicly broadcast over the radio reading out the decree to surrender, is yet another moment which many believe to be the end of World War II.
The official surrender ceremony was held two weeks later on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd. It was only after this formal event that President Harry S. Truman declared the war to be truly over by proclaiming it V-J Day (as opposed to V-E day in Europe). However, it would take until October for all Japanese troops to cease fire in places like Korea, Burma or Taiwan, which they still occupied at the moment of the peace proclamation. Nonetheless the war did end – even if it took multiple tries all around the world to get there.

The history of World War II is full of events of which some are more famous than others. One of the lesser known, but no less interesting, examples of such an event is the air battle that took place right on the border of the Czech Republic over the Ore Mountains in East Germany on September 11th 1944. With over 100 involved planes, this encounter turned out to be one of the biggest confrontations between American and German aircraft over continental Europe.

The special will take place between Tuesday 10th September at 08:00 CEST (GMT+2) and Friday September 13th at 07:30 CEST.

The story of the Battle of the Ore Mountains is a dark one due to the losses suffered on both sides in this memorable clash. What went on to be known as the “Black Monday over the Ore Mountains” began as a regular mission of the 100th Bomb Group division called “The Bloody Hundredth” on September 11th 1944. In the morning, a formation of 36 US Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress heavy bombers took off from their RAF base station in England and began to make its way south. Their target was the Schwarzheide Synthesis Factory in East Germany as well as a fuel factory in the mountains of the Czech Republic.
Initially everything seemed quiet. The bomber formation was supposed to proceed unnoticed deep into enemy territory and then rendezvous with a group of supporting P-51 Mustangs over the crest of the Ore Mountains before descending on their main target. However, the Germans noticed the approaching group of U.S. planes and quickly dispatched a fleet of 60 Focke-Wulf Fw 190A and Messerschmitt Bf 109 G fighters to intercept the intruders. Their timing was perfect, striking before the scheduled rendezvous and catching the defenceless bombers in the midst of their long-distance approach.
Jagdgeschwader 4 made contact with the B-17’s right above the German village Schmiedeberg and attacked with full force. A total of 14 U.S. bombers were shot down, some crashing over the area and others a little further off in the hills of the Ore Mountains close to the Czech border. The losses would have been even greater if it hadn’t been for the squad of P-51s which finally arrived at the scene and quickly forced the German fighters into an aggressive dogfight allowing the remaining heavy bombers to escape.
Although the Bf 109 G fighters could have been more than an even match for the incoming Mustangs, the Germans ended up drawing the short straw in this encounter. Many of their pilots were inexperienced in battle and were flying their first operational mission. This allowed the U.S. fighters to cause heavy damage on the Germans and let their initial group of heavy bombers carry out the rest of their mission successfully, dropping a 53 t bomb-load on the Schwarzheide Synthesis Factory.
In the end, although the Allies managed to turn the fate of this encounter around, this simple bombing run took its toll on both factions. 19 U.S. aircraft were lost as well as 32 German fighters, leading to almost 80 casualties and an equal amount of imprisoned American airmen who were captured on the crash sites.

One of the most famous aerial battles of World War II had British and German warplanes clash in a brutal fight for survival. This long-lasting encounter became known as the â€œBattle of Britainâ€, which culminated on September 15th 1940 in a historic defeat of the German Luftwaffe on what is now called â€œBattle of Britain Dayâ€.

By June 1940, Nazi Germany had conquered most of Western Europe and Scandinavia. Only Great Britain and the Commonwealth were still resisting the Wehrmachtâ€™s complete dominance in Europe. When it became clear that the British werenâ€™t going to bend to Germanyâ€™s threats, Hitler decided to begin military action in order to break the will, and later the defences, of Great Britain.
The first step, which began in July 1940, involved frequent attacks on British convoys and the Royal Navy from submarines and bombers alike. The goal was to force the opponent to redirect its provision supplies to north-eastern Britain. One month later, during Operation Eagle Attack, the Luftwaffe was tasked with gaining air superiority over the channel, in order to clear the pathway for a subsequent amphibious invasion codenamed Operation SeelÃ¶we (Operation Sealion).
However, winning dominance over the skies proved to be a heftier task than expected for the German Luftwaffe. A second attack had to be launched, this time with a different strategy, sending bombers over the channel to bombard military targets. In the first week of September, the Germans would fly daily raids on the British mainland, to attack RAF bases and radar stations. Starting from September 7th, they switched their strategy again and began sending heavy bombers in the direction of London, targeting the city directly.
The biggest raid of this kind happened on September 15th when the Germans sent an astonishing 1120 aircraft, consisting of 620 fighters and 500 bombers, in multiple waves during an all-out daylight attack. Their plan was to draw out RAF control and finish off British resistance in a battle of annihilation. Luckily for the British, the RAF managed to scatter the German bomber formations, forcing the remaining attackers to drop their loads over a wider area, which largely saved London and its people from greater harm. Despite being outnumbered 1:2, the British pilots managed to hold off the Germans and even destroy more of their opponentsâ€™ planes than they lost themselves.
As a consequence, the Germans abandoned Operation Sealion completely and proceeded to the famous Blitz, a strategic night-time bombing campaign that would last until May 1941, but ultimately equally failed. Still, had it not been for the heroics of the British fighter pilots on â€œBattle of Britain Dayâ€, history may have gone in a completely different direction.

I might get P51D at the end of this special, but i was really disappointed, outraged and depressed when i saw that they nerfed it from 8 to 6 machineguns. So i doubt i will be getting it.
