Mid, cuz on mid there are squishier champs. Zed is an assassin and: burst>sustain>tank>burst>sustain>tank>burst>sustain>tank>
So.... yeah. Mid is better.
Cuz on top there are usualy tanks

Mid is the best place for him since there are a lot of squishy mages he can burst really hard, while on top are usually tanks

 

He's my main mid champion , but I think you can play it top too.

 

Zed- the master of shadows is a very good mid lane assassin, he can snowball his lane easily and also the whole game when played correctly.

Passive - Basically what his passive does is when you autoattack a champion or a minion/neutral monster that is under 50% hp, your auto attack will deal bonus magic damage.

-Very good passive for all inning champions.

Q-Razor Shuriken - Zed throws a shuriken that deals damage to all enemies in a line, deals 100% damage to the first enemy hit and 50% to all of the rest enemies hit.

-Good for poking in lane and checking if jungle camps are up, because it has a sound effect when it hits someone.

W-Living Shadow - Zed spawn a shadow which he can switch places with and also the shadow copies Zed's abilities.

-If Zed's Q hits the same target as the living shadow's Q the shadow's Q will deal 50% damage(doesn't matter if the Q goes through a minion) .

-If Zed and his shadow's E hits the same enemy the shadow's E will not deal damage but will slow the enemy.

-Very good for escaping ganks, closing the gap. Can go over walls and can also be used for long range poke in lane.

E-Shadow slash -Zed spins around dealing damage in a circle.

-Thing you should know about this ability is that it doesn't affect your auto attack, this means you can auto attack and cast the ability at the same time.

R- Death mark - Zed's ultimate - Zed jumps to his target, after 3 seconds death mark will trigger again dealing flat damage and also a percentage of the damage you and your shadow dealt to the marked target.

-You can easily assassinate people using this ability.
-It also spawns a shadow at you starting location which you can jump back to.
-Makes you untargetavable for 0.75s so you can dodge some skill shots
and ouplay you opponent.

Zed build:

Start with: Doran's shield + HP Pots and a yellow trinket (when laning against a ranged champion)
Or: Doran's Blade/Longsword + HP pots+ yellow trinket (when laning against melee champions)

Core build:

-Blade of the ruined king
-Black cleaver ( you can get the Brutalizer only and finish the Black cleaver after Last whisper)
-Last Whisper
-Boots of movement (if you roam a lot )
-Mercury threads (i usually change boots of movement for merc threads in late game because you do get focused a lot with cc, so they help a lot )

Defence and situational items:
-Guardian Angel (2 lives op)
-Mercurial Scimitar (if they have a lot of hard cc)
-Maw of Malmortius (against ap damage )
-BloodThirster (if you are really ahead and want more damage)
-Ravenous Hydra ( for better split pushing)
-Youmuu's ghostblade (if they have a lot of armour)
-Ionian boots of lucidity ( for more CDR)

Standard build:
Mercury threads, Blade of the ruined king, Black cleaver, Last Whisper, Guardian Angel, Ravenous Hydra

Zed the penetrator build:
Ionian boots of lucidity, Blade of the ruined king, Black cleaver, Youmuu's ghostblade, Last Whisper, Infinity Edge ( This build gives you a lot of armor penetration and damage but you are really squishy so you have to be very careful)

Infinity edge
BT or Hydra or Sunfire or Banshee or Warmogs or Randuins

Well zed can easily outplay kayle... but he has to bait her ult before ulting so it can be tough, but hourglass is a good item against him though, it last longer than kayle ult
