    • I hope the future for the eSports industry is going to be a bright one! The potential for growth is clearly visible!

    • I’m sure eSports will continue strong, especially as more games get released. Personally, I’d get bored watching people play the same game, so I would definitely home there’d be more games introduced to eSports.

  • Sale of pre-owned games is experiencing a sharp decline.

In 2015 in the UK, for instance, pre-owned software was worth £123 million, but the number has dropped by more than 30% three years later, according to […]

    • People are shifting more towards digital copies of games instead of physical ones and that is the cause that I myself can see being the culprit.

    • This really depends on the game though. Some older games sell like crazy (e.g. older Pokémon games, which sometimes are priced higher than their original price depending on the condition). And among all of the old games, it seems like Nintendo games have a more favorable appeal (e.g. more popularity in speedrunning communities, larger fanbase with certain franchises like Pokémon, Zelda, and Mario, plus revival of older games with remakes and [Virtual Console / Nintendo Switch Online] re-releases). You don’t really see that massive popularity with Xbox or Playstation games, because those consoles have a bigger focus on creating plurality than creating recognizable icons, though there are a few games on those consoles that do draw in attention.

  • Intrigue, enthusiasm, a possibility to not only spend quality time online, but also earn some money – all that makes online games so appealing for a great number of people from all around the world, as well as m […]

    • It’s not hard to become a gamer. People have this vision that a gamer has to be competitive, has to play for some extent of time, has to play on certain platforms (like console vs. PC), or has to have certain qualities, but all you really have to do is play a game and you’re technically a gamer. What you do with a game is up to you, of course, since the whole point of being a gamer is creating your own gaming experience.

  • Over the last decade, online gaming has seen a boom in interest with sites cropping up all over the place. As with all industries that see such success there is always a desire to expand things further, and in […]

  • Games such as Dota and League of Legends have been incredibly successful and have managed to draw a massive playerbase. This success inspired many game developing studio to go for what seemed like a tried and […]

    • I think MOBAs have quite a lot of similar characteristics to MMORPGs, which could probably explain why certain MOBAs just don’t make the cut, and I think the main reason is there are simply more people aggregated towards popular games. Like how there are huge fanbases for MMORPGs like WoW, RuneScape, Guild Wars II, there are huge fanbases for MOBAs like League of Legends, Smite, and DOTA 2.

Second factor is probably the trend of popular genres; when a game or genre is highly successful, there tends to be more games being developed of that genre, so there tends to be competition and a lot of games just don’t make it. And then decline tends to occur when a new genre takes the spot. It used to be MMORPGs that dominated online gaming till MOBA took the spot, and now Battle Royale is the trending genre.

Aside from all of that, development simply takes time, and some games lack the resources (though that’s true for all kinds of games, not specially MOBA). It’s fairly common, especially in Kickstarter games, to see game projects postponed or even cancelled. And it’s pretty hard for small developers to compete against large game developers which a large fanbase.

    • It’s a shame that these games seem to get worse and worse. But I’m still a big fan of Madden.

    • Sports video games aren’t all that bad, especially if you haven’t played one at all or played one in years. It’s mainly just that they’re “oversaturated”. For instance, why should I get FIFA 21, if I have FIFA 20? I think annual releases of sports video games are the main problem, because there’s usually not much to get excited about between one installment and the next installment.

    • Many games can actually help students with different aspects of school. I think it’s rather amazing.

      • There are many ways to learn and help that learning process. Video games can certainly work and improve some aspects of learning.

    • Kind of depends on what students are learning, because some courses might eat up time that you might not even have recreational time to play games. But generally, I think games are a good way to de-stress oneself, especially after a busy day.

But oftentimes, it’s a distraction. Sometimes I just want to procrastinate on an assignment (too difficult, too much, etc.), so I might play a game for 15 to 30 minutes. It can sometimes jog my memory, especially if I can think about my assignment while playing a game, so I guess that’s kind of a benefit to gaming. I tend to avoid games that are too distracting though (especially competitive games), so I might play a game that I could pace myself easily like games with a story, especially RPGs and MMORPGs, and maybe even sandbox games.

  • Making money as a professional eSports player is every gamers dream but what does it really take to break into this competitive market?

Over the past decade, professional eSports has evolved from a burgeoning […]

    • And before Esports players are making as much as professional athletes.

    • If you commit your time to it, you can bring it to that level. Will it work? Maybe it will, maybe it won’t.

    • Well, not all gamers are necessarily eSports gamers, so saying “all gamers” grasp the potential of eSports would be false. It’s like taking something that’s general and trying to equate it to something more specific. But besides, I think most gamers are more interested in having fun. Sure, some enjoy competition (even playing competitively), but almost every objective of a game is to have fun; eSports is just a fraction of gaming the way I see it.

  • Now laptops and even netbooks are no longer so relevant, because tablets are gaining more and more popularity. This is something between a regular laptop and a smartphone, which is a touch screen with basic […]

    • I actually find tablet games to be rather hard to play. I find phones much more appealing.

      • Maybe there’s too much room for controls? Many would say that makes playing on a tablet more appealing.

    • If mobile gaming is doing fine then tables are going to follow.

    • Actually tablets are a great way to get into gaming, especially for a relatively affordable price. The iPad tablets might be your first thought, but those tend to be more expensive and honestly, an iPhone would probably be better since you get more use out of a phone; the other problem with iPad tablets is that you’re limited (to iOS compared to Android). When it comes to gaming tablets, I think some stand out like the Lenovo Tab P11 Pro or the Galaxy Tab A7; a lot of Android tablets that utilize the Snapdragon CPU tend to do fairly well.

Also, if touch controls are discouraging anyone from getting a gaming tablet, then a controller is the quintessential accessory for a gaming tablet. The IPEGA controllers seem to be the best in my opinion, and the popular ones seem to be wireless Bluetooth.

So aside from portable consoles like the PSP, PSVita, 3DS, or the Switch, I do think there’s a place for gaming tablets. They’re pretty convenient to play during car trips (especially if they have good battery life) and they’re also more general purpose than game-specific meaning you can install other apps, not just games, which tends to be the thing that portable consoles lack.

  • With the selection of games available today, 3D games are among the most popular. They are actually the games that come with rich vivid and real three-dimensional high-quality graphics, animations, and sound […]

    • 3D online games are superior to other games when done right. When not done right they are worse than certain 2D games.

    • You can do a lot with 3 dimensions so I can see why people would be into games with that many dimensions.

    • 3D is alright; some games that used to be in 2D transition well into 3D, whether that’d be remakes of older games or just a new vision on a video game series, but it’s not like that for every game. Some games are just better in 2D. And for small developers, it’s actually a lot of work to make a 3D game, so 2D tends to be a simpler choice to opt in on. But I think the main reason why 3D is so popular is because a lot of commonly used game engines for game development are for 3D games (e.g. Unreal Engine, Unity, etc.), while 2D game engines don’t offer as much versatility.

    • Old games are used as references to make new games so their influence is definitely there!

    • Without these old games a lot more of these new games wouldn’t be here or wouldn’t be nearly as good as they are.

    • Using older games as references or influences for newer games can be both good or bad, just depends on what traits of those older games you look at and implement to newer online games. I find it harder to seek elements of older games that would have a modern appeal, because a lot of ideas just haven’t aged well in decades or have just been overused by other game developers. For instance, a lot of MMORPGs, especially newer ones, tend to model themselves after other older MMOs, so it can feel a bit bland to play a new MMORPG. I think in today’s age, it’s a lot more important for game developers to look into creating new design elements to put into a game, especially when formulating ideas for a Game Design Document, especially since the video game market is bigger than it used to be.
