ogreman wrote a new post, What Does the CCG Industry Look Like in 2018? 6 years ago
Of all the game genres in the world, few have such a tuned-in, dedicated fanbase like collectible card games (CCGs). Passionate about playing cards, there are both physical CCGs which use real, printed decks as […]
-
I am expecting more collectible card games to come out.
-
I’ve never been a fan of card games but there are still some decent ones.
-
CCG industry is alright, but I feel like these types of games have been quite stagnant for years, losing competition to rising genres like MMOs, MOBAs, and Battle Royale. Sure, a game like Hearthstone is very popular, but I feel like that’s mainly because of brand recognition (since it’s pretty much from the Warcraft series which was already a massive behemoth). CCGs and TCGs, at least from my perspective, have always felt more like a 90s fad, especially with card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, and Magic. Personally, I’m more interested in card games that revolutionize the TCG/CCG genre, especially games like Slay the Spire which features an amazing roguelike experience, but unfortunately online card games haven’t felt as renewing.

ogreman wrote a new post, Have a Scream this Halloween with the Best Online Games! 6 years ago

Happy Halloween everyone!

I feel like they should make more horror games for Halloween.
-
Never heard of the games mentioned in this article before, and they’re more like “themed” games to a one specific genre. Personally I prefer playing survival and/or horror games on Halloween, because that just fits the occasion better. I think there are some great games like the classic Left4Dead 2 (survival/horror/FPS), The Forest (survival/horror), Resident Evil (zombie/horror), or even a nighttime classic like Slender: The Eight Pages which is probably the best game to play for a Halloween party since it will surely give you (and your friends) a scream.

ogreman wrote a new post, Kickstarter Games 6 years ago
Kickstarter can be a great way to learn about new and potential games if you are a player while also being an excellent source of capital for developers of special projects. Some projects distribute codes such as […]
-
There are many Kickstarter games that were funded successfully and games came out but there are cases where things didn’t go so well. One that i can recall is Yogventures! and things didn’t really turn great for it even though it was funded.
-
Certainly a good number of games have found success on Kickstarter, but what is often understated are the games that actually fail from a Kickstarter campaign. Kind of goes both ways, since game development can be unpredictable, and it’s important to caution yourself with what games you support through Kickstarter by looking at the game’s Kickstarter page to see if the description and goals are reasonable, to research the company’s past history with games (if any), to look at what previews (screenshots, artwork, trailers, etc.) the game has, etc.
Personally, Shovel Knight is my favorite from Kickstarter, because it revisits the classic retro-style of games which is a stark contrast to today’s era where games are moving to 3D. The campaign might not have been as big as Torment: Tides of Numernera or Pillars of Eternity, but I would call Shovel Knight a huge success.

-
Some people want to get codes for games by any means necessary.
-
Game codes are more like mutualistic promotion. In other words, it helps the game grow, but also helps the distributor (the website, forums site, etc.) that’s distributing the game code grow. I think the main reason for game codes having so much demand is because these codes tend to be bundled with special game items that you’ll never be able to obtain again, so of course, people will do whatever they can to get their hands on them. It’s kind of like supply and demand.

ogreman wrote a new post, Online Game Discounts 6 years ago
Finding games for a cheaper price is definitely harder than it looks. It requires a fair amount of scouring different locations on a regular basis. You also need a fair amount of luck in the timing department. […]
-
Getting anything for cheaper does require effort to finding said discounted items that you want to buy.
-
Not a bad idea at all, especially the summer/winter sales. There are usually tons of games you can find around this time of the year (late June / early July) that are largely discounted like the games from the ongoing Steam Summer Sale, and then in the winter holidays, there are discounted games like Nintendo Selects games and then some games from Humble Bundle. I find summer and winter seasons to be the most opportune time to find games on sale.

Pokemon Go is definitely still going strong. I met a person that was still playing it like a month ago.
-
I would not consider Pokémon GO to be a “port”. Yes, the game has assets from the Pokémon franchise like the characters, but Pokémon GO is its own game created by Niantic and has its own gameplay (augmented reality + GPS tracking + touch controls to catch Pokémon) rather than the traditional turn-based gameplay that the series is best known for.
I think a better game for the #4 position (that actually is a port) would be the mobile version of Minecraft; plus Minecraft is ranked as the Editors’ Choice in the Apple app store, so it’s deserving of being mentioned.

now how do i pick between gaming socks?
-
We need an article to choose our gaming socks now!
-
-
Certainly a lot better than sitting in a wooden chair all day. I think the leather cushions make so much difference in comfort, especially if you plan on playing games for hours. And gaming chairs tend to use real leather, and not faux leather like polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride, so you know that these chairs will last for many years and you won’t have to replace them as often like you would with office chairs.

Splatoon was kind of an interesting game to become popular. Nintendo was probably thinking, “how do you make a third-person shooter for kids without featuring realistic guns” and then they somehow thought of paintball guns. It’s definitely a cool concept, especially to get around the typical nature of modern shooter games to appeal to kids.

Super Mario 64 is a pretty good game for its time and the speedrunning community is very large and active.

Playing games for the nostalgia is fun. Sometimes you end up comparing them to current games of today

Some old games are used as an example to make new games and get inspiration from.

They’re certainly fun games even today, especially when these games are seeing re-releases whether they’re remade with more modern graphics (e.g. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening [Switch remake]), released as bundles/collections (e.g. Super Mario 3D All-Stars), or released as part of an online subscription (e.g. classic games offered through Nintendo Switch Online).
