Gaming via Twitch livestreams continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Not only are more people watching others play games online than ever before, but developers are now showing a keen interest in streaming too. There are even streamers making money by gaming on Twitch which has made big names out of slot spinners.
Taking Advantage of Growth
What is spurring on this tremendous growth period of online game watching? Take a look at both the popularity of certain games like League of Legends, Fortnite, and PUBG, plus the increasingly focused streamers for an answer to that question. In fact, some streamers have achieved such a rock star status that they almost exclusively stream for a living.
Who can blame them, really, as the top livestreamers can make quite a lot of money in a few different ways – such as channel subscriptions and product sponsorships. The most popular Twitch Streamer right now is Ninja. Ninja has over 5.8 million followers, due in large part to the overwhelming popularity of Fortnite. However, this streamer does not even crack the top ten when referring to the richest streamers. Believe it or not, but there are over 10 Twitch Streamers that are worth over a million dollars!
Most Viewed Games
Which games do people watch the most on Twitch? Well, the most popular usually rotate throughout each day as different streamers appear online. However, there is a usual list of titles that are at, or are near, the top of the pile. In the past, you would likely see League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as the pick of the bunch. Yet, in the last year or so, Fortnite and PUBG have emerged to join them as the elite games on Twitch. The top three at the time of writing are League of Legends, Fortnite, and CS:GO. The next five games, not including chat, are PUBG, DotA 2, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft.
The Current Streaming King
Fortnite currently reigns supreme in many areas of online gaming right now, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the most viewed game on Twitch. Just look at the player place to see how dominating the game has become. At last count, Fortnite had over 200 million registered players which also makes it the world’s largest game!
With that many players, the money also continues to roll in. Since its release, the game has made over $1 billion! In fact, Fortnite made $323 million in one month which just happens to be the most for any game ever!
I will watch streams rather than streaming myself.
I’ve always wanted to try becoming a streamer lol. I wonder if I would ever be able to make it.
Personally I’m not a huge fan of Twitch; I think it’s most suitable for watching video game events like tournaments, battles/PvP/eSports, and things like that, but not so much for watching regular gameplay (e.g. let’s plays of older games) or even hundreds of speedrun attempts, which explains why most of the top categories are for games like Fortnite, Dota 2, and Hearthstone, or even Just Chatting. I think the main issue with Twitch is that it’s just oversaturated with streamers, and a lot of streams feel low quality. Personally I prefer YouTube for watching games, because videos are generally edited to make the video engaging to watch, but also not as lengthy as a stream; plus you can always pause the video and watch it later (though Twitch does have a thing that lets streamers save streamers as videos, but I find that less convenient).
