Fox, zero opposition for IL2 makes a big difference. Remember, with the absence of enemy fighters and AA guns an IL2 could just fly round and round until it runs out of ammo. At that rate one could take biplanes and have those just pick off German ground targets all day, thus tallying up the kills The P-47 performed all roles in all theaters and was considered to actually be the very best close air support aircraft of all time.

I actually didnt play the IL2 until 5.3, when they gave them out, so I guess I missed the real fun. I take him out now to get those ground target kills.

Il-2 was in use from 29th june 1941 (though some prototypes were already in action since the first day of german invasion, 22nd june 41). Americans showed up in Europe in june 1944. Il-2 ran with opposition for sure for at least 3 years, much much greater opposition than the P-47 ever encountered, as when it was introduced in Europe, allies have already established complete air superiority, while Il-2 was used during the time luftwafe was at full strength.
And by the way, it's absolutely not true that Soviet airplanes were unopposed at any stage of the war, sure the opposition became much less after june 1944, but it was always there all the way up to fall of Berlin

And if you're playing the Il-2 they gave out, the field mod with gunner, you're actually playing the weakest of Il's in game xD so not only you're missing on the fun of pre 0.5.3, but you get the least possible fun now too xD

About P-47 and IL-2. I think you cant compare these two airplanes. IL-2 is low flying close support airplane, like A-10 is now, and P-47 is more like air strike airplane, like F-16 it isnt designed to fly low and be indestructible by small arms fire.
