Russian Q&A with developers from WG, done by EU player Silentstalker, on his blog "For the Record"

    - the KV-1S info about the split into tier 6 and 7 was apparently not correct, it’s possible the split will be into tier 5 and 6 (SS: at this point, we have two sources of high reliability contradicting one another, the 5-6 version however seems more likely)
    - apparently, some players are still complaining about Maus mantlet – Storm said he can’t confirm it is shaped wrongly (SS: I investigated a bit and it should be correct – in one position, it leaves a “gap†at one part of the mantlet, it actually was like that historically)
    - confirmed that some tier 10′s will recieve minor buffs in 9.2, the exact nature of these buffs is not determined yet, they will appear on the test

Russian Q&A with developers from WG, done by EU player Silentstalker, on his blog "For the Record"

A word of warning: an alleged set of future changes of German tanks appeared on RU forums (claiming that VK6501 will be a premium, Maus will get a longer 128mm gun, some changes to VK4501 etc.) – it’s a fake and some of the alleged changes are so outrageous it should be evident at first glance, but just to be sure, I am posting this warning here in case it makes its way to our forums.

In the meanwhile, here’s some QA about the upcoming Stronkhold mode.

    - the map during Stronkhold mode raids will be chosen randomly, will not contain assaults or encounter
    - clan deputy commander in Stronkhold will be able to do the same things as the clan commander, aside from actually creating the stronkhold
    - Stronkhold bonus (“reserveâ€) will combine with any event bonuses
    - Stronkhold buildings that would allow you to get any tanks are not planned
    - there will be two stages of Stronkhold implementation, one with the raids and maximum stronkhold tier of 4, the second with clan vs clan battles and maximum tier of 10
    - there will be no “neighboring bases†in Stronkhold mode, in order to attack clan, you simply pick the enemy clan you will want to attack. Also, you will choose, in which time (timeframe) can your stronkhold be attacked (SS: eg. “defender chooses the timeâ€)
    - it’s theoretically possible the number of players doing Stronkhold raids will be reduced from 15 to 10, but this will be decided only after testing

    - the medium raid tier will allow tier 5 and 6 light tanks (unlike in companies), it’s possible this will be reviewed
    - what will happen when you lose defensive battle for your stronkhold: some buildings will be damaged and they will have to be repaired, certain amount of the industrial resource will be “stolen†and will go to the enemy. It will not be possible to completely destroy enemy stronkhold under any circumstances.
    - consumables such as minefield for stronkhold will be usable only in combat, not outside it. It will be possible to put minefield straight before the battle somewhere on the map, artillery strike and air strike will be used on certain map sector (SS: as in, A4 rectangle for example) etc.
    - it’s possible the company mode will be removed completely, it will be decided after stronkhold is implemented
    - there will be no “point limit†in raids, you can use any tanks of the appropriate tier
    - unlike in the raid mode, when attacking enemy stronkhold, you will know the map in advance
    - apparently, the credit and XP gain in raids will use the same rules as it is now in companies
    - there will be no gold rewarded for Stronkhold (“want gold, play CWâ€)
    - when attacking/defending Stronkhold, tier 10 vehicles will be used (SS: as in, no divisions)
    - apparently, if you become a clan leader, invite people to clan, develop the stronkhold and then kick everyone out of the clan, you will get to keep the developed stronkhold you got with the help of the clanmates
    - it’s pointless to start a stronkhold with a clan of your account and 19 of your alts, to get bonuses, you have to participate in stronkhold battles and for that you need 14 other people
    - it is not possible to start a raid with less than 15 people
    - stronkhold statistics will be kept separate, just like in the case of historical battles
    - there will be no “fog of war†in stronkhold mode
    - the bonus you recieve from stronkhold reserves will be recieved by every player of the clan, regardless of whether he participated in raids or not

    Soviet T-34-100

those of you, who are playing World of Tanks for a while do probably remember that at one point, the tier 6 medium tank, T-34/85, had an option to mount the 100mm D-10T gun. This was actually quite historical – there was an attempt (a prototype) to mount a 100mm gun in the T-34/85 turret and today, we’re going to have a look at it.

The reason for the proposal to actually upgun the T-34/85 was the fact that even in 1944, it was clear that the 85mm-equipped tank was inferior to the Panther, when it came to guns and improvements were in order. The first step was to first install a high-power 85mm gun (ZIS-85-BM) with improved penetration capabilities. This happened in September 1944, when Factory No.192 developed this powerful gun with the muzzle velocity of 980 m/s. After the development, the gun, now designated as ZIS-1, was transferred to the Gorokhovetsk proving grounds, but the trials proved to be the a failure.

In the beginning of October 1944, the design bureo of the Factory “Bolshevik†tried to develop an 85mm high-power gun as well – this time it was an experimental 85mm V-5 gun with the muzzle velocity of 950 m/s. Additionally, the factory also developed a conical gun V-9K with muzzle velocity of more than 1150 m/s. But the characteristics of the gun were not satisfactory, the gun was barely able to keep up with the dreaded German 88mm L/71 and in the Spring of 1945, the development was cancelled.

Regardless of these failures, the development moved towards the equipping of the T-34 with a 100mm gun. This task of mounting a 100mm fun into a regular turret was given to the design bureau of Plant No.9 and the Department 520 of Plant No.183 in July 1944. However preliminary development showed that the standard 1600 mm turret ring would be insufficient. At the same time, the larger 1800 mm turret ring of the heavy IS tank was too large to fit on the T-34 without seriously reworking the vehicle, which was practically impossible. Either way, the developers of the Gorky Factory No.92 design bureau, led by A.Savinov, managed to relatively successfully implement a 100mm gun into a standard T-34/85 turret. They proposed a gun by the name of 100mm ZIS-100 for it, based around the earlier mass-produced ZIS S-53 model gun. Yet again, the trials of this gun were not successful, since the gun, when shooting during the testing, overstressed the transmission and suspension of the T-34/85 by its power. The installation of a muzzle brake did not solve the issue either.

The second part of the attempts to upgun the T-34/85 tank was connected with the development of the new modern T-44B medium tank (later on leading to the development of the T-54). From the initiative of A.A.Morozov and the Factory No.183, a hybrid experimental vehicle was created, with the suspension, transmission and other parts of the T-34/85 and with the turret of the T-44B. Since the turret ring was larger (1700mm), there were some changes made to the T-34 chassis as well. The hull machinegun was removed and so was one of the crewmembers. The bottom and the roof above the engine of the vehicle was made thinner, the fuel tanks were modified and there were some modifications in the suspension as well. In the end, the vehicle weight reached 33 tons and this tank was designated as “T-34-100″.

Between February and March 1945, this tank was trialed on the Sverdlovsk and Gorokhevetsk proving grounds, both with the 100mm ZIS-100 and D-10T guns (the latter being from OKV No.9). The testing was relatively successful, even though the accuracy of the guns was not good and firing the guns still proved to be quite a burden on the suspension. The Red Army liked the vehicle and they pushed the developers to further work on the vehicle and to fix the various faults, but unfortunately, various attempts to figure out and fix the aforementioned issues were not met with success.

At this point, in the Factory No.92 in Gorky by the end of 1944, a new 100mm gun LB-1 was developed with a reduced recoil and they mounted this gun on the T-34 as well. Generally, the gun was similiar to the D-10T and the ZIS-100. The gun of the tank with this gun reached 9150 mm, with the gun barrel being 3340 mm longer than the dimensions of the tank itself. Between 6th and 14th of April, 1945, the T-34/100 with the LB-1 gun was tested, with 1000 rounds fired and over 501 km driven with this tank. The practical rate of fire of this gun was between 5,2 and 5,8 rounds per minute, the accuracy of this gun was higher than its predecessors and the stress on the suspension was lower. The trials were a success and the army liked this vehicle as well, but in the end, the T-34/100 was never mass produced – the war was practically over, there was no need for it anymore and new, more modern tanks (T-44 and T-54) were being developed at this point as well.

The LB-1 was later used in 1945 to equip the T-44 (T-44-100), because its original 85mm armament was considered insufficient after the war, but the two prototypes of T-44 proved to be unreliable and poorly maneuverable – in the end, they were never adopted in service. Further work on the T-44 made little sense, since in March 1945, first T-54 prototype was created. Even here, the three 100mm guns were used and tested, ending with the final victory of the D-10T gun, that served as a standard T-54/55 gun for a very, very long time.

    US T-13 Hornet B

    Source: T-13, Hornet B | Plze

T-13 Hornet B was a heavy eight-wheel armored car/tank, developed in the late 30′s by Trackless Tank Corporation. This company from New York started to work on the desing of this fast, heavy wheeld gun carrier in 1937. It was a private activity, not supported by the US Army and the development was led by the president of the company, Floyd del Brown. In 1940, this design evolved into the Hornet Model B High Speed Trackless Tank.

The Hornet consisted of roughly 80 percent of standardized and comercially available parts. It had eight wheels and a riveted armored hull. The rear six wheels were propelled, making the vehicle 8×6. The wheels were attached independently and were equipped with shock absorbers. The Hornet had three possible engine options – Continental or Wright gasoline engines or a Guiberson diesel, but the prototype was equipped with a Guiberson 9-cylinder T-1020 265hp engine, which was mounted in the rear of the vehicle. The driver was sitting in the frontal left part, the right side was given to another crewmember, but the entire crew compartment design was judged as completely unsuitable for the purposes of war. The Hornet weighed 7,5 tons (including the turret) – the prototype however did not have the turret mounted, instead it had a small copula with a machinegun. The vehicle was 2,5 meters wide and 1,9 meters tall (without the turret).

Hornet Model B had a 12,7mm thick armor and the prototype finished in October 1940. It was trialed for the first time on 24.10.1940 on Long Island proving grounds. The vehicle was also introduced to the British Purchasing Commission (BPC). Another presentation took place on 15.11.1940, this time in front of three representatives of the Canadian Army and Lt.Col.P.S.Bloweye from the BPC. While his final report did note that the vehicle performed well, he also expressed his doubts about the performance of the heavy armored car, when compared to the 6×6, 4×4 armored cars or the M2A4 light tank. He did believe the Hornet to be too heavy and expensive and saw no immediate use for it in the British army.

In the meanwhile, the Trackless Tank Corporation company was negotiating with other firms about the production of the Hornet – including Ward Safe & Lock Co. and American La France, but the negotiations were not successful. In January 1941, negotiations were also started with Huber Manufacturing Company from Marion, Ohio.

The Australians were interested in the Hornet as well ever since 1940, since the Australian government, desperate to get their hands on modern armored vehicles, were looking for them in Britain and the USA. BPC was kind enough the pass on the Hornet documentation to its Australian Division and from there, the data got to Australian authorities. At first, Australia was very interested, since the landscape of the country was ideal for the vehicle class represented by the Hornet. In September 1940, they even passed on their conditions, price demands etc. to Washington, but in the end, in 1941 they chose “more traditional†solution. The Australian interest however was what sparked further Canadian and American interest later on. In May 1941, the Canadians ordered one vehicle for trials and a production run of 17 vehicles later on, there was also further development for the US Army. By the end of 1941, at least two improved Hornets were manufactured by Reo Motors in Lansing. The Hornet, this time with a welded hull, recieved the official designation of T-13.

The T-13 was armed with a .30 cal machinegun in the hull, a 37mm gun and another .30 cal in the turret. The original Guiberson diesel was replaced by the Continental W670-9A 250hp gasoline engine. There was even a heavier 75mm gun carrier version developed by the end of 1941 at the Fort Knox army base – this project reached at least mock-up stage and one prototype was apparently partially built. However, the USA entering the war ended the interest in this interesting vehicle in favour of more conventional tanks. Further fate of the Hornets is not known, however one prototype survived at Aberdeen proving grounds until the war in Korea, when it was dismantled for scrap.
