World of Tanks studio acquires F.E.A.R. 3 dev
    News
    By Eddie Makuch

Wargaming buys Day 1 Studios for $20 million; now working on unannounced console game.

World of Tanks studio Wargaming today announced it had acquired F.E.A.R. 3 developer Day 1 Studios for $20 million and is putting the team to task on an unannounced console title. The company will be rebranded Wargaming West.

Wargaming is developer of numerous PC massively multiplayer online games, including World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes.

This marks Wargaming's first-step effort in the console space. Platforms for the company's new console game were not announced, nor was a timetable for its release.

Wargaming West currently has a handful of open positions, including calls for an IT Administrator, a producer, and multiple part-time quality assurance staffers.

Day 1 was founded in 2001 by ex-FASA Interactive veteran Denny Thorley and Microsoft Game Studios' TJ Wagner. Out of the gate, the studio scored a hit with 2002's MechAssault for the original Xbox. After a MechAssault follow-up in 2004, the studio created the original property Fracture for LucasArts and then took over for Monolith on Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 3.

Great event :D I want the same on our serwer :D But no hope :(

    First Use of the IS

By February of 1944, the Red Army had started to field a new class of heavy tanks to replace the aging Churchills and KVs in the heavy tank regiments. They were given to Guards regiments, crewed by two officers and two senior sergeants each as befitted their perceived importance.

The tanks were built with a specific, but certainly not sole, criterion in mind: destroy Tigers. Testing against a captured example had shown that of all the weapons currently in Red Army service, the 52K 85 mm anti-aircraft gun seemed to be the most effective against that kind of tank, and the new heavy tank was designed around it; if a new tank were to enter service, it may as well be capable of defeating Tigers!

IS, or IS-85, tanks started production in September of 1943 and a grand total of 107 are estimated to have been produced (according to Baryatinksy).

Twenty-five of these tanks found their way into the 13th Guards Heavy Tank Shock Regiment, wherein a company of five ISs supported an attack on the town of Lisyanka. The timing was a little poor, and the five heavy tanks showed up at the tail end of an assault by T-34s of the 109th Tank Brigade. After having dealt with the T-34s, the defending German assets which included Panthers, PzKpfw IVs, anti-tank and assault guns, switched their attention to the ISs. Within ten minutes, two ISs were burning, and the other three driven back with multiple hits suffered per tank.

It was not the most auspicious debut for the new heavy tank, and the subsequent engagements over the next few weeks were not necessarily any better. Fortunately, IS-85 was really just a stopgap, with the substantially upgunned IS-2 already in production.

    Tankers!

For this month's Challenge tournament, we're bringing the battle to Sand River. We're attempting to capture some of the atmosphere of the fighting that took place in the arid lands of Tunisia during February of 1943. It was the first major clash between American and German forces. Unfortunately, the German forces were ultimately the victors of the Battle of Kasserine Pass.

Here's your chance to reenact a bit of history, and maybe even rewrite it. Either way, it's your opportunity to slug it out with a few other tankers for some serious gold!

The battle for North Africa took place over a period of around three years and control of the region switched sides frequently throughout the time.

It all began with the fall of France in 1940. At this point most of Europe was under the control of the Axis. North Africa was seen as a vital route to get supplies and troops into Europe, and soon became critical to both sides – to the Allies to keep the route open and to the Germans who wanted to firmly closed. It was also very much a battle for the vast oil reserves, critical for both sides.

The campaign began in full on the 10th June 1940, with a declaration of war by Italy. The Italians invaded Egypt from Libya on 13th September 1940. The British troops arrived in December and quickly started to drive westwards, claiming many territories, including the vital port of Tobruk.

The Germans rallied and sent the feared AfrikaKorps under the command of the legendary Erwin Rommel.

For over a year, the front moved back and forth across northern Libya and Egypt in a series of advances and retreats by both sides. Cities were won, lost and won again. Eventually, in early 1942, the Germans had managed to push the Allies all the way eastwards to El Alamein. In July 1942, the Allies began a desperate series of counterattacks, later called the First Battle of El Alamein. Finally, in October 1942, the Second Battle of El Alamein proved to be the decider of the campaign. Afterwards, the Germans were driven all the way back west to Tunisia. After a period to reorganize and re-collect, the Allies managed to ensnare Rommel and his troops in a classic ‘pincer’ movement, forcing surrender. The campaign was over with the Allies victorious.

The campaign resulted in a lot of lessons learned for both sides. The British infantry tanks (such as the Matilda) had proved to be fearsome opponents. However, the British 2 pounder guns proved to be inadequate against the Germans. A turning point came when the Allies were reinforced with American medium tanks equipped with 75mm guns. Meanwhile, the Americans saw the power of the British six pounder guns and took inspiration for themselves.

There are plenty of desert maps in World of Tanks. Which arena do you prefer? Sand River? El Halluf? Choose wisely and hit the sands this weekend, commanders!
